A paving job usually looks won or lost long before the first block, slab or resin surface goes down. If the ground underneath is weak, uneven or holding water, the finished area will show it soon enough - with dips, loose edges, standing water or movement underfoot. Good groundwork is what gives paving its strength, shape and lifespan. It also affects how tidy the finished surface looks and how much maintenance it needs later on. It is tempting to focus on the visible finish - the style of block paving, the colour of slabs, the neat border lines. But the part you cannot see does most of the hard work. Levels matter here. Paving should sit below the damp-proof course of the property, and it should slope gently away from buildings so water does not collect where you do not want it. A surface can look level to the eye but still need a slight fall to drain properly.

2. Excavate to the correct depth

Excavation is where many problems begin if corners are cut. The ground needs to be dug out deep enough to take every layer required - sub-base, bedding layer and the paving itself. The finished depth will depend on whether the area is for pedestrians or vehicles, and on the condition of the existing ground.

Soft spots, old roots, buried rubble or patches of made-up ground should be removed. If they are left in place, they can create weak areas that settle differently from the rest of the surface. A neat dig with straight edges gives a far better starting point than trying to patch over poor ground.

For a typical domestic patio, the excavation depth is often less than for a driveway. A driveway needs to cope with more weight, so the base generally has to be deeper and more heavily compacted. 3. Check the soil and ground conditions

Not all ground behaves the same. Clay soils can hold water and swell or shrink with weather changes. Sandy ground drains more freely but may need careful compaction to stay firm. If the site has been disturbed before, the soil may be less stable than an untouched area.

The sub-base should be laid in layers rather than one deep dump all at once. Each layer needs compacting properly before the next goes down. That gives a denser, stronger result and reduces the risk of future sinking.

Compact thoroughly

Compaction is not just a quick pass with a plate compactor. It needs to be done methodically across the full area, with attention paid to edges and corners as well as the middle. Poor compaction is one of the most common reasons paving starts to dip.

If the ground is very dry, dusty or inconsistent, the process may need a bit more care. If it is overly wet, compaction can be less effective. Conditions on the day matter, which is why groundwork should be planned around weather where possible.

Create the right fall for drainage

A paved surface should shed water rather than trap it. The fall does not need to be dramatic, but it does need to be deliberate. Water should move away from the house and towards a suitable drainage point or permeable area where regulations allow.

This part is easy to overlook when people focus only on getting a flat finish. In reality, a perfectly flat paved area can be a problem if rainwater has nowhere to go. For driveways in particular, drainage should be thought through from the start rather than treated as an add-on.

Bedding layer and edge restraint

After the sub-base comes the bedding layer, which depends on the paving type. Block paving is commonly laid on sharp sand, while some slabs are laid on a mortar bed. Resin systems and other finishes can require different preparations again.

What matters is that the bedding layer suits the material and is laid evenly at the correct depth. Too much bedding material can create movement. Too little can make it difficult to achieve a proper finish.

Edge restraints are equally important. They keep the paving locked in place and stop the surface spreading over time. Without solid edges, even well-laid paving can begin to loosen at the sides. On driveways and paths especially, that restraint helps preserve the line and strength of the surface.

Common mistakes when preparing ground for paving

The biggest mistake is underestimating the groundwork. Many failed paving jobs look fine at first because the visible layer has been laid neatly. The trouble only appears after a season of rain, frost and daily use.

Shallow excavation is a frequent issue, especially where someone wants to save time or reduce spoil removal. Skipping proper compaction is another. So is ignoring drainage and assuming water will find its own way off the surface.

Using the wrong materials can also cause trouble. Building on loose soil, recycled waste that does not compact properly, or an uneven sub-base creates weak points from the start. Even small inconsistencies can show through later.

Not every surface needs the same approach. Block paving, porcelain patios, gravel driveways, tarmacadam and resin bound systems all have different requirements beneath the top layer.
